Does using a CPAP machine affect eye health?

Does using a CPAP Treatment affect  eye health?

If you or someone you know has obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), make sure to hear the blog on how the condition can affect the long term health of th eyes if not managed or treated properly.

While a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machine is the standard treatment for OSA, it can also affect the eyes:

  • Eye Dryness: Air leaking from poorly fitting masks can cause dryness and conjunctivitis. Dryness can also occur if air is pushed up through the nasolacrimal (tear duct-nose) canal.
  • Intraocular Pressure: CPAP usage has been linked to elevated intraocular pressure, making it very important to monitor people who are already at risk of glaucoma.

Remember to tell your optometrist or ophthalmologist about your use of a CPAP machine so a good analysis of any dry eye or eye pressure can be done.  Let your primary care doctor or GP work with your eye care provider to make sure your obstructive sleep apnea and CPAP are not harming your eyes.
